BIOGRAPHY
Gail Whitsitt-Lynch is an artist whose mediums are direct carving in stone and wood, and printmaking. She learned her carving through independent study with Arnold Prince, Professor of sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design. Her involvement with printmaking has been life- long, having produced editions of wood blocks, serigraphs, and etchings.
Originally from New York, Gail came to Rhode Island to attend Rhode Island School of Design where she earned a BFA in Photography, and continued her printmaking. After graduation in 1971, Ms. Whitsitt- Lynch began exhibiting her printworks, supplemented after 1974 with her carvings. Both her sculptures and prints have been shown throughout New England, and are represented in public, and private collections across the United States.
Through the combined auspices of the National Endowment for the arts, and the Rhode Island State Counsel on the Arts, Ms. Whitsitt-Lynch designed, and constructed a monumental ferro-cement eagle for Roger Williams Park, Providence, in 1976. Other awards and grants have included the Byron J.,Cleveland Memorial Sculpture Award from the Copley Society. Boston; two Best in Show awards from the Providence Art Club; two invitations to the Stone Sculpture Symposium at Caldas da Rainha,
Portugal; memberships in the New England Sculpture Association, and Nineteen Rhode Island Artists on Paper; and a National Endowment Grant (through the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc.), to direct inner city girls in the construction of a ferro-cement sculpture.
In addition to studio work, Ms. Whitsitt-Lynch has taught many varied populations of art students. She is currently teaching stone and wood carving and three dimensional design at Rhode Island School of Design.
She has taught printmaking and commercial design courses at Bristol Community College in Fall River. She has developed individual educational programs for nonverbal severely impaired youngsters; taught creative writing and visual arts to gifted elementary students; obtained grants for arts programs in visual arts, creative writing, dance, and drama for the Warwick School Dept.;- and developed and directed elementary, junior high, and senior high group projects as an artist in residence, sponsored by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.
